Child Protection at Laikan

Any school, counselor, or parent evaluating a platform for under-18s deserves straightforward answers, not marketing language, and not only about the AI mentor. Here's exactly what we collect, what we never do with it, who can see it, and the rights parents and students have.

What we collect: only what we need

Laikan's guidance journey runs on a deliberately narrow set of information:

  • Basic profile information: name, email, and grade level
  • Responses to in-platform values, interests, and strengths activities
  • Career and pathway choices made within the platform
  • General usage data: which activities a student has completed

What we never do

Never sell student data

Student data is never sold, to anyone, for any reason.

Never use it for advertising

No ads, no targeted advertising, no tracking for marketing purposes. A student's data is used to guide them, not to target them.

Never shared for marketing

We don't share student data with colleges, universities, or other third parties for marketing purposes.

Who can see it

  • The student themselves: it's their journey.
  • Their counselor or school: visibility into profile and progress, to support the guidance relationship the student already has, not to replace it.
  • Laikan staff: solely as needed to operate and support the platform.

How we secure it

Encrypted throughout

Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest.

Role-based access

Access is limited to the staff who need it, with authentication controls on every account.

Monitored and logged

Access to production systems is logged and monitored, backed by a documented incident response process.

Hosting and infrastructure run on Amazon Web Services; product analytics run through PostHog. Any international transfer of personal data is made subject to appropriate legal safeguards.

Your rights

Parents, guardians, and students can request access to, correction of, or deletion of a student's data at any time. Data is kept only for as long as it's needed to support the student's guidance journey, and is deleted once that relationship ends unless the law requires us to keep it longer.

Built with educators, not just engineers

Designed with practitioners

Developed with school counselors and youth-development specialists who work closely with students and families.

Counselors stay in control

Review mode lets a counselor approve every recommendation before it reaches a student; Direct mode lets guidance flow straight through once they trust it.

Parent visibility (coming soon)

Parents will be able to see their child's progress and discuss it directly with the AI mentor, so conversations start with context, not catch-up.

Keeping the AI mentor in bounds

Managed content guardrails

The mentor runs behind Amazon Bedrock Guardrails, a managed AWS layer that filters harmful or inappropriate content before it reaches a student.

A purpose-built persona

We designed the mentor's personality and voice ourselves. It's not a general-purpose chatbot wearing a Laikan logo.

Tightly scoped prompts

Conversations are scoped to career and academic guidance tasks, not open-ended chat.

How conversations are reviewed

Being direct about where we are: routine human review of every AI conversation isn't in place yet. What is in place today is automated chat review: dedicated evaluation prompts that check conversations for issues so we can catch and address problems. Moving to human review of flagged conversations is something we're actively working toward, and we'll update this page as that develops.
